Elephant is considered to be the largest mammal living on land.

Following are the interesting facts about this amazing creature:
  1. Elephants are of two types. These are African elephants and Asian elephants.
  2. African elephants are generally larger than Asian elephants
  3. The difference between both types is due to the structure of ear. African elephants ears are larger than Asian Elephants ears.
  4. In Asian Elephants only the males have tusks whereas in case of African elephants, both the sexes have tusks.
  5. Elephant can eat upto approximately 160 Kgs of Food per day.
  6. The major enemies of elephants include lions, humans and hyenas.
  7. Elephants are normally hunted by human beings who want to sell their precious ivory tusks.
  8. Elephants generally eat grass, leaves, roots, fruits and buds.
  9. Elephants can weigh about 4 to 8 tons.
  10. Pregnancy period in elephants is twenty two months.
  11. Newly born baby elephant is known as calf.
  12. Female elephant can give birth once in five years.
  13. The maturity age for reproduction in twelve to fourteen years.
  14. Only one calf is born at a time. Generally there can be no twins or triplets.

Because of the overpopulation problems in places like India, elephants feeding grounds have been converted to crop land to feed the ever-growing human population. Conflicts occur when the elephants look for the nearest source of food which is likely to be in the fields of the local farmers.
